Japanese conglomerate Omron on Friday inaugurated its first India manufacturing facility in Chennai.
Built as a dedicated unit for its medical devices arm Omron Healthcare, the facility currently has an annual capacity of 300,000 Omron Blood Pressure machines with plans to expand this to over 3 million within the first year.
The Kyoto-based company had, in 2023, signed an MoU with the Tamil Nadu government to set up a facility with a proposed investment of ₹128 crore.
Speaking to mediapersons at the inauguration, Ayumu Okada, President and CEO, Omron Healthcare, said that a domestic production unit will help the company scale its market share in India, which is currently at around 40 per cent.
While Omron has sold medical devices in India since 2010 by importing from its factory in Vietnam, company executives said that a local production unit will cut delivery times from three weeks to a single day.
The expansion comes at a time when the medical devices market in India has grown rapidly driven by increasing health awareness and domestic policy push. Industry estimates value the sector at approximately $12 to $15 billion with projections to reach $50 billion by 2030.
Okada suggested that India has emerged as one among Omron Healthcare’s fastest growing markets.
“Cardiovascular disease, respiratory and diabetes have emerged as the leading causes of death in India. We believe our devices will support the country’s growing healthcare needs,” she said.
While currently dedicated for BP machines, Omron also plans to add nebulisers and other product categories to the Chennai facility.
The current capacity is fully catering to the domestic market. “Overtime we also plan to export some of the products to European markets,” she added without sharing an exact timeline
The event also saw the presence of Junta Tsujinaga, President and CEO of Omron Corporation, who reiterated the company’s long-term commitment to India. Omron, listed in the Tokyo Stock Exchange, operates in multiple sectors including industrial automation, healthcare, public infrastructure and data solutions.
