Despite regulatory issues, drugmaker Cipla expects to reach $1 billion in annual revenue in the United States by year-end, driven by its existing pipeline, said Achin Gupta, Cipla Managing Director and Global Chief Executive Officer. He said the company’s financial performance in the second quarter (Q2) was impacted by the geopolitical situation, along with pressure in the US.
The company’s net profit for the three months ended September 30, 2026, stood at ₹878 crore, down 35 per cent, and revenue for the period under review was ₹ 7,404 crore, down from ₹7,589 crore in the same period last year. The company’s dip in its quarterly performance was impacted by lanreotide supply challenges in the US, among other things, besides the geopolitical situation, Gupta told businessline. The US business posted revenue of $172 million during the quarter. He maintained the company’s projection to reach $1 billion in the US by the end of the year, driven by products in the respiratory segment, as well as a peptide.
While the company worked with Pharmathen International, the manufacturer of lanreotide, to address its issues with the US Food and Drug Administration, he said it had also found a second source to mitigate the impact. On the geopolitical impact, the company’s quarterly performance had been impacted by 100 to 200 basis points, by a combination of factors including supplies to the Middle East region being hit; an increase in freight costs; and an increase in the cost of input materials, Gupta said in an interaction with the media.
On the trade margin caps the Centre has introduced on certain cancer drugs, under the Supreme Court’s watch, Gupta said they would follow the guidance given to the industry and keep medicines affordable. Giving an overview of the quarterly performance, he said Cipla’s One-India business recorded its highest quarterly sales at ₹3,516 crore, up 12 per cent from the same period last year. The company has a tie-up with Eli Lilly to sell a second Mounjaro brand under the brand name Yurpeak in India, and Gupta said it was the second-largest brand in the segment.
