Vedanta Group is exploring opportunities to invest around ₹70,000-80,000 crore in West Bengal in power generation and an aluminium smelter, its Chairman Anil Agarwal said on Wednesday.
The proposed projects are subject to feasibility studies. The group would examine the viability of setting up the projects in the State, where coal availability and existing infrastructure could support industrial operations.
“The combined investment in power and aluminium could be ₹70,000-80,000 crore. It can create thousands of jobs in the State,” Agarwal told mediapersons here.
The Vedanta Group chairman was talking to the media after meeting West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at Nabanna, the State secretariat. “The Chief Minister told me that I could explore investment in any sector, and I said I would look at it. I promised him that thousands of jobs would be created,” Agarwal said.
He indicated that if things proceed as planned, work on the projects could begin within the next three years.
Asansol, in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district, is likely to emerge as a possible location for the projects as here Vedanta Group has its land.
Agarwal said alumina, the key raw material for aluminium production, could be transported from the group’s operations in Odisha, including Jharsuguda. Existing railway connectivity could help facilitate transportation.
He said access to coal, water and timely clearances would be crucial to taking the proposals forward. The group would examine the available options in consultation with the State government.
“He (Anil Agarwal) has given a specific proposal to set up an unit in Asansol. We had a good meeting. He is very interested in investing in the State,” the Chief Minister said after the meeting. Adhikari said Agarwal has shared assurance that the proposed projects can generate up to 10,000 direct jobs.
“I welcomed the Group and assured them to provide full cooperation from our government for making investment in West Bengal,” he added.
