Tesla India on Friday opened its sixth experience centre in the country at Express Avenue Mall, Chennai, as the electric vehicle maker expanded its retail and after-sales presence in Tamil Nadu.
This is the the company’s sixth centre after Mumbai, Delhi, Gurugram, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The expansion comes as around 680 Tesla cars have been registered in India this calendar year till date, according to Vahan data.
The new centre will allow customers in Chennai and across Tamil Nadu to experience, order and take delivery of Tesla vehicles locally.
The company has also made a Tesla-approved collision centre and service facility operational in Poonamallee, providing access to genuine parts, trained technicians, software-enabled diagnostics and collision repair.
“This is our sixth experience centre in India and the third in the south. We are very excited that we are coming closer and closer to our customers here in Tamil Nadu and Chennai,” said Sharad Agarwal, India Managing Director, Tesla. Tesla experience centres are already in Delhi, Gurugram, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.
Tesla said customers placing orders in September would be targeted for delivery before Diwali, subject to completion of the required processes.
The company said the Chennai facility is part of its direct-to-consumer model, under which customers can order vehicles without having to visit an experience centre, with Tesla delivering the vehicle to them. Its service and body-shop network is operational in Delhi, Gurugram, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad, besides Chennai, he said.
Agarwal said Tesla was also expanding its charging infrastructure in India. The company currently has five Supercharging stations with 20 stalls in the country and is expanding home-charging capabilities.
The company is offering two models in India — the Model Y and Model Y L. The Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive is priced at ₹50.89 lakh and offers a claimed range of up to 500 km under WLTP testing. The three-row, six-seat Model Y L starts at ₹61.99 lakh and offers a claimed range of up to 681 km.
Agarwal said Tesla’s ownership model was built around software and remote diagnostics, with more than 70 per cent of problems that arise potentially solvable remotely. The company also offers mobile service, with workshop visits required only in more extreme cases.
The company is positioning its vehicles as technology products, with over-the-air software updates and AI-enabled features. Aggarwal said Tesla was moving from touch-based controls towards voice interaction, with its AI assistant capable of interacting in several Indian languages.
Agarwal also highlighted Tesla’s end-to-end business model, covering vehicle design, manufacturing, retail, delivery and charging infrastructure, saying the company operates these functions directly rather than through third parties.
