Tata Trusts has committed an undisclosed grant to the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) for the development of its new School of Undergraduate Studies, providing a major boost to the institute’s plans to build a world-class undergraduate education programme and campus in Bengaluru.
The grant will support IIMB’s long-term academic vision, campus development and institutional roadmap for the new school, which is being established about 27 kilometres from the institute’s main campus in Bengaluru.
The endowment from Tata Trusts will be utilised to set up academic and residential infrastructure for the campus. It will also support the development of research clusters focused on emerging and interdisciplinary areas such as artificial intelligence, data science, algorithmic design, Indian Knowledge Systems and applied business learning, as per IIMB.
The School of Undergraduate Studies will commence classes in August this year with two four-year, full-time residential programmes: a BSc (Honours) in Economics with a minor in Data Science and a BSc (Honours) in Data Science with a minor in Economics.
The inaugural batch will comprise 80 students, with 40 students in each programme. The curriculum combines economics, data science and business studies.
Noel Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts, said the support reflects the Trusts’ long-standing philosophy of building institutions of enduring value. “For over a century, Tata Trusts has supported some of India’s most defining institutions. This support reflects the same instinct — to help shape an institution at a formative stage, when philanthropy can influence not just infrastructure, but also its character and ambition,” he said.
Welcoming the grant, Dr Devi Shetty, Chairperson of the Board of Governors at IIM Bangalore, said transformative endowments are critical for institutions aspiring to achieve global leadership. “We are committed to nurturing talent at the undergraduate level and creating a pipeline of thinkers capable of addressing the challenges of a data-driven world,” he added.
