Tata Power and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop ₹250 crore power infrastructure for BPCL’s Petro Resid Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit (PRFCCU) project at its Mumbai refinery.
Under the agreement, Tata Power will provide the 110 kV connectivity and undertake the design and development of the associated power infrastructure. The infrastructure is expected to be completed in approximately 24 months and will help meet the PRFCCU’s power requirement of 90 MW, stated an official release on Tuesday.
The ₹14,203-crore PRFCCU project, with a processing capacity of 3 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA), is aimed at enhancing the recovery of higher-value products from refinery residues and supporting BPCL’s petrochemical diversification strategy. It is the first project of its kind being executed in India, according to the companies.
For Tata Power, the agreement will also strengthen its transmission network in the Trombay area, an important industrial zone in Mumbai. The additional infrastructure is expected to support rising electricity demand from large industrial consumers and other developments with concentrated power requirements.
The company also plans to develop a 400 kV transmission facility at Trombay over the next five years as part of its broader strategy to strengthen Mumbai’s power network. The proposed augmentation is expected to improve power evacuation capacity and support grid reliability for the city’s industrial and commercial consumers.
