European automobile conglomerate Stellantis on Thursday said it will invest ₹4,000 crore by 2030 to develop and launch 12 products – seven all-new and five refreshed versions of the existing vehicles across the Citroen and Jeep brands, a top official said.
The future portfolio will follow a multi-energy strategy, spanning efficient internal combustion engines, hybrids, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and battery electric (BEVs) technologies, drawing on Stellantis’ global capabilities, the company said.
“Today’s announcement reaffirms our belief in long-term conviction in the Indian markets, backed up with fresh investment, and offering strong product guidance along with options for customers to exercise multi-energy technology,” Shailesh Hazela, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Stellantis India, told businessline here.
He said the first product will be launched in the second quarter of next calendar year. Hazela also said the company will leverage its partnership with Tata Motors to bring shared-platform technology to India and globally, and may even work with Jaguar Land Rover to co-develop products for the Indian market. With this, the company’s cumulative investment in India is expected to reach up to ₹15,000 crore by 2030 (with an earlier commitment of ₹11,000 crore).
On October 12, Stellantis India, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd (TMPV) and its subsidiary Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd (TPEM) signed a ‘Definitive Agreement’ for a partnership in advanced technology and product collaboration. Under the agreement, TMPV will provide Stellantis access to its advanced product technology and vehicle architecture, which Stellantis will build upon through its product development and engineering capabilities in India to address the requirements of more than 50 global markets.
Vehicles developed under the agreement will be manufactured in India at Fiat India Automobiles Private (part of Stellantis), the 50:50 joint venture between TMPV and Stellantis.
“We will be utilising three elements — one is our own engine, second is our global engineering and global partnership — and third is our local partnership. Element of it can go in some of the products, important is, every product which we launch will have the brand DNA, and that is uncompromised,” he said.
The five Jeep and seven Citroen launches over the next three years, he said, will take Stellantis into all high-opportunity segments. “We want to increase our market share by 3x. Currently, we have 0.25-0.27 per cent of the country’s passenger vehicle industry,” Hazela added.
