One in every eight vehicles registered in India in September was electric, with EV registrations touching an all-time monthly high.
EVs accounted for about 13 per cent of the overall 25.37 lakh registrations during the month, according to FADA data. Two-wheelers supplied more than 60 per cent of EV volumes; electric car registrations nearly doubled from a year earlier, while three-wheelers remained the most electrified category, with nearly two in every three registrations electric.
Electric two-wheeler penetration rose to 11.58 per cent in September from 8.17 per cent a year earlier, as registrations nearly doubled to about 2.07 lakh, an analysis of FADA’s category-wise registrations and fuel-mix data shows.
That makes two-wheelers the principal volume engine of India’s EV market. More than six of every 10 EVs registered in September were two-wheelers. Overall two-wheeler registrations rose 33.08 per cent year-on-year to 17.90 lakh.
Three-wheelers remain the penetration leader. Their EV share increased to 64.90 per cent from 56.65 per cent a year earlier. Based on overall category registrations, that translates into about 86,000 electric three-wheelers in September, up from roughly 61,400 a year earlier.
Passenger vehicles are emerging as another significant leg of the transition. EV penetration increased to 8.45 per cent from 5.74 per cent a year earlier. That translates into approximately 36,100 electric cars and SUVs registered in September, nearly double the 18,600 a year earlier. Electric PV volumes, therefore, grew substantially faster than the overall PV market, where registrations increased 32.10 per cent year-on-year to 4.27 lakh.
The transition in cars is broader than battery electric vehicles. Hybrids’ penetration in PVs increased to 9.44 per cent in September 2026 from 7.30 per cent in September 2025, while the share of CNG/LPG vehicles rose to 23.11 per cent from 22.02 per cent over the same period.
Commercial vehicles are also beginning to electrify, with EV penetration rising to 4.04 per cent from 2.16 per cent a year earlier, but the larger volume shift is occurring in personal mobility.
For two-wheelers, crossing 10 per cent penetration is particularly significant because of the category’s scale. Combined with the near-doubling of electric car registrations, September’s numbers suggest India’s EV transition is moving beyond highly electrified three-wheelers and deeper into the country’s much larger personal-mobility market.
