JLR India expects higher sales this year as the automotive sector, especially the premium segment, bounces back after a sluggish last year.
“It’s not just the GST cut, as that is well behind us. India’s buyers are now eager to spend money on their mobility amid rising aspirations. We sold around 6,183 units last year in India and are expecting to close this at a higher number this year,” Rajan Amba, Managing Director, JLR India, told businessline.
Adding to rising consumer demand, the company’s electric range of vehicles such as the Range Rover Electric and Range Rover Sport Electric are also set to make their India entry around April next year, said Amba, anticipating a higher growth rate then. “JLR India is currently growing on par and slightly higher than the industry,” he added.
On India manufacturing, Amba said JLR has already started making vehicles at its Panapakkam plant near Chennai. “The units made here are for the India market now, and we have not yet taken a call on exports as yet from here.”

Amba was in Chennai for JLR India’s inauguration of a new retail presence. This comprises a modern luxury sales showroom and a dedicated service and spare parts facility created in partnership with KUN Auto Works. The new facilities will cater to Range Rover, Defender and Discovery clients across Chennai and neighbouring regions.
JLR India’s distribution network now comprises 30 outlets across 25 cities in the country. Interestingly, JLR India is also working on setting up a retail showroom at Madurai, which will open shortly.
Arunkumar Uppuswamy, MD, KUN Auto Works, said the new showroom and dedicated aftersales facility reflect KUN and JLR’s shared commitment to deliver exceptional customer experiences and world-class ownership support.
