The foundation stone for Adani Power’s 3,200 MW thermal power project was laid in Assam on Sunday, marking an investment of around ₹48,000 crore and setting the stage for what the company says will be the “Northeast’s largest power generation asset.”
The project, being developed at Chapar in Assam’s Dhubri district. Speaking at the foundation stone ceremony, Jeet Adani, Director, Adani Group, said the company has already conducted four to five job drives in Assam, with around 4,500 local youth hired for the project that will bring together thousands of workers, engineers, technicians, contractors and suppliers.
The 3,200 MW project marks a significant expansion of Adani Power’s presence in Assam and comes as the group scales up its investments across the Northeast. Jeet Adani said the group’s businesses in Assam are spread across sectors including power, airports, smart meters, cement, connectivity and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services. “Assam has the potential to become the ‘Battery of India’,” Jeet Adani said, outlining the group’s long-term view of the state’s energy potential.
The foundation stone ceremony comes against the backdrop of the Adani Group’s broader investment plans for the Northeast. At the Rising Northeast Global Investors Summit last year, group chairman Gautam Adani had announced plans to invest up to ₹1 lakh crore in the Northeast over the next decade. Jeet Adani said work was already underway in Assam with investments of nearly ₹80,000 crore.
Beyond power generation, the group is also developing and operating Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, where it plans to develop an airport city with commercial, hospitality, retail and entertainment infrastructure. “In the first phase, we are building two hotels—one premium and one midscale—alongside vibrant retail, food, beverage, and entertainment zones,” Jeet Adani added.
