Many swear by natural skincare remedies, and Esha Deol is no exception. In a recent interview, when asked about homemade beauty tips she learned from her mother and actor Hema Malini, Deol said, “I still remember, my mother had a small bottle of glycerine and lemon. She used to apply it to her hands and legs every day. She said, it removes the tan when you are in bright lights.”
She added that she also swears by “homemade chana (gram) paste”. “I’m not sure why, but our mother always insisted on it,” she told Mamaraazzi.
Does a mix of glycerine and lemon help remove tan?
Dr Karuna Malhotra, aesthetic physician and cosmetologist, Cosmetic Skin and Homeo Clinic, Rajouri Garden, New , emphasised the use of natural remedies for skin care, with glycerin and lemon being among the commonly recommended ingredients. “Glycerin acts as a humectant, drawing moisture into the skin and keeping it hydrated. This is particularly important for tanned or sun-exposed skin, which often becomes dry and flaky. Lemon, on the other hand, contains natural citric acid and vitamin C, both known for their skin-brightening and mild exfoliating properties,” said Dr Malhotra.
According to Dr Malhotra, a combination of glycerin and lemon can help lighten superficial tanning over time when used regularly and with caution.
“Lemon helps in sloughing off dead skin cells and reducing pigmentation, while glycerin soothes and nourishes the skin, preventing irritation that lemon’s acidity might cause,” said Dr Malhotra.
However, Dr Malhotra cautioned against using lemon directly on or broken skin, “as it may cause irritation or photosensitivity.” She recommended applying the mixture at night and following up with sunscreen during the day to prevent further tanning. “While not a quick fix, this natural remedy can support gradual tan removal and overall skin health when paired with sun protection and proper skin care,” said Dr Malhotra.
What to note?
If you have sensitive skin or prefer not to try such , it is best to consult an expert who can guide you on how to remove tan, primarily when you work under bright lights, said Dr. Malhotra.
