Decathlon is strengthening its India play while eyeing a bigger share of the running gear segment. The sports goods manufacturer and retailer, which aims to double its India revenue by 2030, is witnessing double-digit growth. It aims to garner a turnover of ₹1,000 crore by 2030 from its expert running sub brand, Kiprun by Decathlon.
Sankar Chatterjee, Chief Executive Officer, Decathlon India, told businessline, “Kiprun by Decathlon is a strategic launch for us at a time when the running gear segment is growing rapidly in the country. The sector is expected to grow in double digits over the next five years. Currently, in the country more than 2,000 marathons and running events are organised up from 600 events in 2018.”
“Even though we are launching the top of the range of products, we are pricing them competitively. We are aiming to achieve a running sport turnover of more than ₹1,000 crore by 2030 serving over five million active runners through the full product portfolio which includes shoes, apparel, trail gear, hydration pack and accessories,” he added.
The Indian running gear market is estimated at about $2.7 billion and is expected to grow to about $4.9 billion by 2034 as per estimates by Imarc Group.
Asked about the overall growth of the company, Chatterjee said in this calendar year the company is witnessing double-digit growth. The company is also in the process of investing 100 million euros in India. “This year nearly 50 per cent of the quantity of products in terms of footwear that we sell in Indian stores and channels is “Made-in-India.” Nearly 60 per cent of the overall revenue that we are going to achieve this year will be “Made-in-India”. So, we are investing in big format stores, product development and to strengthen manufacturing ecosystems. We are focused on the long-term growth potential,” he added.
Responding to a query on store expansion, Chatterjee said, “We open a little more than 10 stores per year and will continue to do that. This year too, we have already opened four stores and expect to add six stores in the coming months. We are witnessing strong traction for various products on the quick commerce channel too. We are bolstering this with our own D2C channel where we are now delivering within 2 hours in several cities.” It currently operates 132 stores in India.
On increasing sourcing from India for global operations, Chatterjee said, the company will be closely looking at the India-EU FTA as it aims to grow the share of sourcing from India.
