India’s oldest exchange BSE on Wednesday reported a 44.9 per cent year-on-year rise in consolidated net profit to ₹809.15 crore for the quarter ended September, while revenue from operations increased 34.1 per cent to ₹1,432.66 crore.
The exchange’s net profit and revenue were, however, lower sequentially, declining 7.4 per cent and 8.5 per cent, respectively, from the June quarter. Net profit in Q1 FY27 was ₹874.02 crore and revenue was ₹1,566.02 crore.
BSE attributed the pressure on equity-market volumes to foreign portfolio investor outflows amid macroeconomic uncertainty. “There are quite a few macroeconomics situations today, as we all are aware, resulting in a broader outflow from the Indian market from FPIs,” BSE said, adding that new IPOs were generating “encouraging trading volumes”.
BSE recorded its highest-ever quarterly average daily turnover of ₹10,494 crore in the equity cash segment in Q2 FY27. In index options, average daily premium turnover fell to ₹22,531 crore from ₹29,615 crore in Q1, due to lower volatility and temporary shifts in participation.
The exchange reported a recovery in September, followed by record monthly premium turnover of ₹35,481 crore in October, while the highest single-day expiry premium turnover was ₹85,356 crore on October 22.
BSE said the cash-equity market share was yet to reach double digits. Its market share in monthly index options contracts was around 2-3 per cent, while that in non-expiry weeks was 6-7 per cent.
The exchange said it was difficult to isolate the impact of the Reserve Bank of India’s bank guarantee norms on volumes and collateral, given concurrent changes to other rules, initial teething issues with the new gas system and global uncertainty. Existing bank guarantees with unexpired tenures also made the impact difficult to assess. The exchange also said it had submitted applications to regulators for MSCI-linked derivatives and was awaiting the final outcome.
Co-location and other connectivity charges, including throttle charges, generated ₹103 crore in the first half of FY27. BSE said its data centre had around 500 racks, all allocated, and it was building another 170-190 racks. Its board has also approved accepting MMRDA’s offer of a plot in the Bandra-Kurla Complex for additional premises and infrastructure. Management said it was too early to outline infrastructure plans, as formalities were still under way.
BSE’s EBITDA margin stood at 67-68 per cent, and management said a 65-70 per cent margin appeared sustainable. Any revision to transaction and co-location charges would depend on market feedback, it said.
