A diplomatic breakthrough for India saw BRICS members reach consensus on a joint declaration on Saturday, despite differences between Iran and the UAE over the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The agreement followed a series of behind-the-scenes negotiations aimed at resolving the disagreements.
It stressed on conflict prevention efforts and voiced concerns on unilateral tariffs.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed the adoption of the declaration after the first day of the two-day summit hosted by India.
Talks over the wording continued until the final stages after Iran and the UAE initially maintained opposing positions. Since BRICS decisions are taken by consensus, any one member has the ability to prevent the group from issuing a joint declaration.
