Biocon has secured a clearer timeline for commercialising its pertuzumab biosimilar, Pebrilzo, after reaching a global patent settlement and licensing agreement with Genentech, resolving disputes that had clouded its market entry plans.
The company is targeting the first quarter of 2027 for launches in the European Union and the UK, followed by the US in the third quarter of 2028. Commercialisation in other markets is expected over 2026–2028, subject to regulatory approvals.
The agreement addresses patent-related hurdles across multiple markets, including the US and Canada, giving Biocon greater visibility on when it can take the drug to market. The staggered launch schedule also places regulatory clearances and execution at the centre of its commercialisation plans.
Pebrilzo targets HER2-positive breast cancer, a segment of oncology treatment that includes biologic therapies. Adding the product to its portfolio gives Biocon another opportunity to expand its presence in oncology biosimilars, where access to major markets and the timing of launches can influence commercial prospects.
Pebrilzo adds to Biocon Biologics’ existing oncology biosimilar portfolio, which includes trastuzumab, used to treat HER2-positive breast cancer; bevacizumab, prescribed for several cancers; and pegfilgrastim, which helps reduce the risk of infection following chemotherapy. The company also has denosumab and pertuzumab among its later-stage biosimilar assets.
Biocon is also building out its pipeline with proposed biosimilars of pembrolizumab and nivolumab, two checkpoint inhibitors used in cancer immunotherapy, as well as a subcutaneous formulation of trastuzumab. The additions would broaden its presence beyond established antibody therapies into newer classes of oncology treatments.
Biocon reported a 355 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) increase in its net profit to ₹141 crore for the first quarter of FY27. Revenue rose 10 per cent y-o-y to ₹4,336 crore.
