Haldia Petrochemicals’ subsidiary Adperma on Wednesday inaugurated its ₹6000-crore phenol and acetone manufacturing plant in West Bengal’s Haldia.
With an annual capacity of 345,000 tonnes of phenol and 215,000 tonnes of acetone, the facility is the largest of its kind in India. Inaugurating the facility at Haldia Petrochemicals Limited (HPL), West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said this significant milestone is set to further strengthen the State’s industrial growth, attract investments and create new employment opportunities.
Designed and built using process technology licensed from Lummus Technology, a TCG Group company, the phenol and acetone manufacturing plant is integrated within HPL’s existing petrochemical complex, drawing directly on the upstream feedstocks — propylene and benzene. The project, which is also the first phenol plant on the Eastern coast, significantly expands India’s domestic supply of two intermediates that the country has historically imported in large volumes.
Purnendu Chatterjee, Chairman, The Chatterjee Group, said, “Seeing this project come to life in Haldia is deeply gratifying. It reflects our long-held conviction in West Bengal’s industrial potential, and I believe Adperma will prove a strong foundation for the next stage of growth in chemicals — one that creates genuine, lasting value for the region and the country.”
Phenol and Acetone are key chemical intermediates used across diverse industrial applications. With enhanced domestic production, the facility will strengthen supply capabilities and create a platform for downstream value addition.
Speaking about the launch of the plant, Navanit Narayan, MD & CEO, Haldia Petrochemicals Limited, said, “This plant has been a long time in the making, and seeing it commissioned is genuinely satisfying. It will improve domestic availability of chemical intermediates that Indian industry depends on, and it gives us a platform to move progressively into higher-value products.”
HPL said strengthening Haldia’s position as a chemicals manufacturing hub is central to what it is trying to build.
The Chief Minister said West Bengal’s industrial policy will be unveiled before Diwali, adding work is on regarding a new land policy and incentives to industries.
“We have started working. Within a year, West Bengal will be the destination for investors and industrialists. The new industrial policy (draft) had been submitted. It includes a new land policy and incentives for industries. We are working on it. Before Diwali we will unveil it,” Adhikari added.
