The Andhra Pradesh government has invited Kochi-based Kitex Garments to establish a 2,000-acre textile and apparel park in the state, according to Kitex Managing Director Sabu M. Jacob.
A high-level delegation led by Andhra Pradesh Minister for IT and Human Resources Development Nara Lokesh visited Kitex Garments at Kizhakkambalam and held preliminary discussions on the proposed project.
According to Jacob, Kitex will spearhead the design and layout of the proposed apparel park and help mobilise investments from global investors. The company already operates manufacturing facilities in Warangal and Hyderabad in Telangana, and the performance of these units has contributed to Andhra Pradesh’s decision to pursue the large-scale textile project under Kitex’s leadership.
The proposed park, spread across 2,000 acres, is expected to receive financial support from the Central Government. The project is estimated to require an investment of more than ₹50,000 crore.
Jacob said Andhra Pradesh is one of India’s major cotton-producing states but lacks adequate processing and value-addition facilities. As a result, a significant portion of the state’s cotton is currently transported to other states for further processing and manufacturing. The proposed park, he said, would enable more of this processing and value addition to take place within Andhra Pradesh.
The project is also expected to generate direct employment for around 200,000 women, particularly those with basic educational qualifications, while creating additional opportunities for cotton farmers and other stakeholders in the textile value chain.
Jacob also said Kitex’s proposed expansion in Telangana includes a factory that, upon completion, is expected to become the world’s longest factory building.
The Andhra Pradesh delegation also visited the Twenty20 food security market at Kizhakkambalam and expressed interest in establishing a similar market based on the Twenty20 model in Nara Lokesh’s constituency.
Andhra Pradesh Industries Minister T. G. Bharath and senior government officials accompanied Lokesh during the visit.
Following the meeting, Lokesh posted on social media that he had a “good discussion” with Sabu M. Jacob on the textile and apparel sector, manufacturing opportunities and Andhra Pradesh’s growing industrial ecosystem. He said he had invited Kitex to explore opportunities in Andhra Pradesh and partner with the state in its growth journey.
