Storage battery major Exide Industries is aiming to scale up its industrial battery exports to the European market from this fiscal year, backed by its exclusive arrangement with Germany-based ExCom Energy Solutions.
In a stock exchange filing on Wednesday, Exide said the long-term strategic cooperation agreement with ExCom for industrial batteries and energy storage systems across the European Economic Area (EEA) establishes a strong commercial and strategic collaboration between the two companies.
The German energy solutions company, which has strong access to the European market, will lead distribution, technical project support, and after-sales coordination in as many as 27 countries in the region. The lead-acid batteries, produced at Exide’s plants in India, will be marketed and sold under the ExCom brand.
Exide Industries Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer Avik Roy said the European Economic Area represents a strategically important market for the company’s industrial energy storage business, with growing demand for dependable, efficient, and sustainable energy solutions. ExCom GmbH brings strong market access, deep application expertise, and proven local execution capabilities.
“By combining these strengths with Exide India’s manufacturing scale, diversified product portfolio, and technological expertise, we aim to create long-term value for customers across the EEA and accelerate the growth of our industrial battery business in the region,” Roy said.
Talking to businessline, a senior official at Exide Industries said the company’s overall share of exports has declined to around 5 per cent from around 8 per cent in the last two to three years because of geopolitical conflicts, export restrictions and market consolidation in Europe. The company has historically had a strong presence in Europe for industrial batteries, particularly traction batteries. With this tie-up, the Kolkata-based company is planning to further expand its presence in the European Economic Area.
The partnership will initially focus on traction and motive-power battery solutions serving material-handling equipment, logistics operations, and other industrial mobility applications, as well as stationary battery systems for industrial, infrastructure and energy storage applications. Future expansion could include advanced chemistry solutions if the relationship develops and demand supports a broader portfolio.
Holger Aschke, Managing Director, ExCom Energy Solutions GmbH, said, “Together, we intend to build a robust European platform for traction batteries while exploring next-generation industrial energy storage opportunities. Beyond advanced lead-acid battery technologies, both companies see significant potential to expand their cooperation into selected advanced chemistry applications over time.”
