Suriya is one of the Tamil heroes who is very popular in the Telugu states. With films like Ghajini, Aaru, Nuvvu Nenu Prema, Surya S/o Krishnan, Singam, and 24, Suriya gained a massive fanbase among both youngsters and family goers. However, he is yet to score a blockbuster that could cement his position as a top-tier star actor in both Tamil and Telugu, like Rajinikanth or Vijay.
He is now gearing up for the release of his new film, Retro, which is slated to hit the theatres on May 1. However, with no huge market left for him in Telugu anymore, Suriya has to work hard to promote Retro in AP and Telangana before its release.
Suriya’s market has come down drastically since the colossal disaster of his last film, Kanguva. While the Telugu rights of Kanguva were sold for more than Rs. 22 crores, the Telugu rights of Retro were sold for mere Rs. 10 crores.
Director Karthik Subbaraj also hasn’t scored a solid hit in Telugu so far. Meanwhile, the film’s lead actress, Pooja Hegde, has been off the radar in Telugu states. The trailer of Retro couldn’t generate enough buzz. Moreover, it is clashing with Nani’s HIT 3. There are many such hurdles for Suriya, and he needs to work hard to regain the Telugu market.
Additionally, Suriya’s next film is lined up with Venky Atluri, which will be a Telugu-Tamil bilingual. Thus, Suriya needs to score a big hit like Jailer or Vikram with Retro so that he regains his lost market in AP and Telangana.
