Actor Vijay Deverakonda has revealed that he has no regrets about doing Liger, despite it being the biggest failure of his career. In a recent interview with Filmfare, Vijay opened up about his experience working on the film and how it impacted him personally and professionally.
Vijay said he was completely invested in the character, going so far as to learn martial arts and physically transform himself to portray a fighter. He also worked on mastering the stammering aspect of the character. “Everything about the role was so challenging that I completely enjoyed the process of making it,” he shared.
As a huge fan of director Puri Jagannadh, Vijay had high hopes for the film. “I was extremely sad that we didn’t make a better film. It was a great idea on paper that we fudged… But I have zero regret about the film,” he added.
The actor also mentioned that Liger’s failure taught him valuable lessons and changed him as a person. He believes that whatever he does now and in the future will be shaped by the experience and the learnings from Liger.
Not just Vijay, the audience too had high expectations from Liger. The film was produced on a massive pan-India scale, backed by Karan Johar, and featured Bollywood actress Ananya Pandey as the female lead. It also included legendary boxer Mike Tyson in a special role. Vijay promoted the film aggressively, predicting it would be the biggest hit of his career.
However, the film disappointed audiences with its weak storyline, over-the-top characterizations, and jarring dialogues, turning it into a colossal failure at the box office.
Vijay is currently working on his upcoming film Kingdom, directed by Gautam Tinnanuri. It is slated for a worldwide release on July 4.
