The Union cabinet has approved the Waqf (amendment) bill based on the JPC report, according to media reports. While approving the proposed changes in the Waqf bill, the Modi Cabinet accepted 14 alterations made by a joint parliamentary committee—to which the bill had been referred in August—in its meeting on February 19, according to an NDTV report.
As many as 44 changes were proposed by the Waqf (Amendment) Bill to laws governing central and state Waqf boards, which decide how Muslim charitable properties are managed in this country. The proposals—which include nominating non-Muslim and (at least two) women members to a Waqf Board—sparked protests from the leaders of the opposition.
