Two men were injured in gunfire following an argument with two others at Khumulwng, headquarters of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), police said on Wednesday.
The police said that after the firing incident on Monday night, the victims–Harikumar Debbarma, 68, and Bidhu Debbarma, 45–were taken to a local hospital first and later to GBP Hospital in Agartala.
“Police are investigating the matter to find out the cause of the gunfire. A case was lodged on Tuesday. Till now, no one has been arrested,” a senior officer from the police headquarters said.
Takarjala Mandal, a leader of Tripura’s ruling , said that some people who introduced themselves as activists of the party were involved in hooliganism in the locality. Another BJP leader said the party had no link with the incident.
“No such activists can stay in the party. If we identify any such, we don’t keep such activists in our party,” the leader told reporters, adding that a team from the BJP’s state committee would visit the area on Thursday.
On Tuesday, a delegation from the BJP’s ally TIPRA Motha, which is in power in the TTAADC, visited the victims and demanded action against the assailants.
TIPRA Motha leader Rajeshwar Debbarma later wrote on social media, “Pursuant to the guidance and direction of His Royal Highness Maharaja Pradyot Bikram Kishore Manikya Deb Barman, the illustrious founder of Tipra Motha Party, I, along with party functionaries from Khumulwng area, visited the incident spot at Dukmali Hati, Khumulwng, the headquarters of TTAADC on 13th May, 2025.
On the previous night (12th May, 2025), around 9 pm, local goons allegedly led by Shri Sahid Debbarma perpetrated a cowardly assault on Shri Hari Kumar Debbarma, ex-serviceman and shopkeeper, and Shri Bidhu Debbarma, an auto driver. The assailants resorted to open firing, grievously injuring Shri Bidhu Debbarma with a bullet wound and severely battering Shri Hari Kumar Debbarma. During our course of visit, we met with the victims and urged Shri Raj Kumar Jamatia, officer in charge of Radhapur police station, to apprehend the culprits and ensure exemplary punishment at the earliest.”
