In a new interview, Bobby recalled how he was abruptly removed from the project despite initiating its early development with the director. Speaking to Instant Bollywood, Bobby shared how he first discovered the script, while watching a rush print of Socha Na Tha. Director Imtiaz was directing with Bobby’s cousin Abhay Deol. Bobby urged Imtiaz to write a film for him and the film evolved into Jab We Met.
“I tried really hard to make that film (Jab We Met) happen; I reached out to a lot of people,” he said. Bobby recalled that he played a major role in bringing production house Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision on board. The producers said that they were interested in working with him but hesitant about backing Imtiaz who was new in the industry. Bobby pushed them for the collaboration and successfully convinced them to give the director a chance. Bobby said that he reached out to Kareena Kapoor Khan through a contact to offer her the lead role, but she refused to do it. Preity Zinta was also approached but turned it down as she said that she would consider it at a later time.
He said that despite his involvement in the making, he was dropped from the project. Later, Kareena took up the role and the lead role of a male went to Shahid Kapoor. The film gave audiences one of Bollywood’s most cherished films and best duo.
“It can be tough in the industry; I was really upset about it at the time,” Bobby recalled. Bobby was unable to express any resentment towards Imtiaz and said that the director had to make a difficult choice for the film’s success. As per reports, Jab We Met 2 is on the cards. Jab We Met was a huge success and is still a modern classic.
