Teji Bachchan, ’s mother and Sridevi’s mother Rajeshwari Iyengar had once warned Khuda Gawah producer before the film was shot in Afghanistan. In a recent interview, Manoj recalled that Teji had told him if Amitabh’s wife, actor became a widow then his wife would also meet the same fate. In a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Producer Manoj Desai said, “If anything happens to my Munna and Jaya wears a white saree, then you should also commit suicide there. Your wife will also wear a white saree.”

Sridevi’s mother too had given a similar chilling warning, demanding him to remain in Kabul if her daughter was caught in a predicament. She showed no qualms in threatening to get him killed if he returned without Sridevi. Recalling Sridevi’s mother’s warning, Desai said, “If anything happens, don’t even think of coming back. I will kill you.”

For those who came in late, Khuda Gawah was filmed in places around Afghanistan, including Kabul, which wasn’t safe due to terrorism threat. According to reports, Mohammad Najibullah, the country’s President had ensured security in 1991 for the shoot that lasted for 18 days.

Released in 1992, the film was written and directed by Mukul S. Anand. It featured Amitabh Bachchan, Sridevi (in a double role), Nagarjuna, Shilpa Shirodkar, Danny Denzongpa, Kiran Kumar in key roles. The music was composed by Laxmikant–Pyarelal. The film was crucial as it marked Sridevi and Bachchan’s third film after Inquilaab (1984) and Aakhree Raasta (1986). In the film, Badshah Khan travels to Indian from Afghanistan to find the killer of Benazir’s father. He does it to impress Benazir. Even though he succeeds, he is framed for a murder and sent to Indian prison.

The film, which was released in 1992, received critical acclaim and was lauded for several factors including performances, direction, and music. The film had reportedly also became the third highest-grossing film of 1992, after Beta and Deewana.
