A 20-year-old B Tech student from National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jamshedpur allegedly died by suicide amid struggles with depression and exam stress, police said.
Police said Devyanshu Gandhi, a second-year computer science student, died at a residential building Friday night. Devyanshu was declared dead at a hospital later.
The police said his father, Brij Kishor, a locomotive pilot, was in Jamshedpur at the time of the incident. The family, originally from Ranchi, had been living with Gandhi for the past six months owing to his deteriorating mental health, police said.
Vinay Kumar, RIT police station officer-in-charge, said: “His parents informed us that he was severely disturbed by exam stress and had missed three exams in the second semester. On Friday, he skipped his physics exam…” Kumar said.
He said Gandhi had had attempted suicide previously as well. “He was under medication after undergoing treatment at a mental health facility in Ranchi. However, over the past week, he had stopped taking his medicines… he acted as if he was swallowing them but threw them away,” the police officer said.
“Further investigation is underway. We are looking into other possible reasons behind the suicide,” Kumar said.
