After Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and a member of his family faced social media attacks last week, Opposition leaders have come out in his support and asked the government to take action against those involved.
The Foreign Secretary had been one of the faces of the government’s briefings during Operation Sindoor from May 7-10 and had announced the truce agreement between India and Pakistan on May 10. After that, he and a member of his family faced social media attacks, including personal details being shared.
Congress MP and former MoS for External Affairs said in a post on X on Monday: “There’s no doubt that @VikramMisri is an outstanding officer who has served the nation admirably for decades, most recently during the current crisis. I stand with him and deplore those who would insult and undermine an honest and hard-working public servant.”
president and Lok Sabha MP had on Sunday demanded that the government investigate those behind the trolling. In a post on X, the Samajwadi Party said the government and its ministers had not spoken up about the attacks faced by Misri and a member of his family.
“…If the BJP government does not take any action within 24 hours to stop such people, then it will not take long for the people of the country to understand whose people these are, for whom they work, who is protecting them and why. BJP’s silence will be considered its involvement,” Yadav said.
AIMIM president and MP , too, said the Foreign Secretary should not be blamed for the government’s decisions.
“Mr Vikram Misri is a decent and an Honest Hardworking Diplomat working tirelessly for our Nation. Our Civil Servants work under the Executive, this must be remembered & they shouldn’t be blamed for the decisions taken by The Executive /or any Political leadership running Watan E Aziz,” Owaisi said on X on Sunday.
(Marxist) MP John Brittas wrote to Union Home Minister on Monday demanding an investigation into the “malicious and coordinated cyber attacks” against Misri and a member of his family.
Hitting out at the BJP for the social media attacks, Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose said on Sunday on X: “Disgusting and unacceptable that the evil depraved @BJP4India IT Cell and its scumbag associates are now trolling India’s top diplomat Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Mr Misri is a highly competent and professional officer as I know from his briefings to the External Affairs Standing Committee. No end to the depravity of Bharatiya Jumla Party soon to be consigned to the dustbin of history.”
