The wonders of drinking black coffee are unparalleled. According to Dr Pranav Honnavara Srinivasan, senior consultant gastroenterologist at Fortis Bengaluru, having black coffee daily can offer several potential health benefits, many of which are linked to its rich content of antioxidants, caffeine, and essential nutrients like B vitamins.
“One of the most immediate benefits of drinking black coffee is its effect on mental alertness. The caffeine in coffee acts as a central nervous system stimulant, blocking adenosine receptors in the brain and promoting the release of neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine,” said the expert, adding that caffeine is also known to increase adrenaline levels in the bloodstream, which can enhance physical performance by preparing the body for physical exertion.
But the market for counterfeits is booming. After fake paneer, adulterated coffee is now raising concerns among health experts.
So, before you reach for your beloved cup of joe first thing in the morning, pause and check whether the ground beans are as fresh and pure as promised on the label, or do they carry threats of significant damage to your health in the long term?
We consulted an expert to learn what happens to the body when you and how to stay safe from fakes circulating in the market.
Edwina Raj, Head of Services – Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics, Aster CMI Hospital, , told that fake coffee is often mixed with tamarind seed powder, date seed powder, or even starch to cut costs.
Raj says you can spot adulteration by performing a simple water test, such as dropping a spoonful of coffee powder into a glass of water. “Pure coffee floats, while fake coffee or added powders may sink or leave a cloudy residue. Another sign is bitterness or a strange aftertaste when you drink it,” she shared.
The expert also believes drinking adulterated coffee regularly can significantly harm your health. She listed the potential harmful effects, including stomach problems, acidity, or even food poisoning. The body may react to these fillers with bloating, gas, or allergic responses. Over time, fake ingredients may even affect digestion and kidney function.
To stay safe, always buy from trusted brands, check the packaging seal, and avoid those with unusual smells or colours. Your daily cup should wake you up, not harm your body.
An overload of caffeine acts as a diuretic and flushes out water from your body, which leads to dehydration. Caffeine should no doubt be included in moderation. “Caffeine, if included in moderation, should be combined with an additional source of hydration with a boost of antioxidants in natural beverages such as fruit-infused water, amla, and tulsi shots,” she said.
She says alternatives like fruit smoothies, vegetable soups, tender coconut water, buttermilk, turmeric, and pepper quench your thirst. And if you crave caffeine, try a matcha latte, which contains a relatively shorter dose.
