Can you guess which one television show managed to keep everyone glued to the screens? 37 years ago, one mythological TV series impressed all with its gripping plot. As per the historical data, the show generated 40 million views and Rs 23 crore in revenue. Guess which show is it?
It was Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan which became the most-watched TV series in the world. As per reports, the show was aired in over 55 countries and earned a viewership of 650 million. Ramayan had earned 40 lakh views per episode and was aired for the second time in 2020. The show was also successful in gaining highest ratings and TRPs. Ramayan became the most expensive TV show produced with a budget of Rs 9 lakh per episode.
The renowned mythological drama was based on the epic Tulsidas’ Ramcharitmanas and created an impact on the minds of the audiences. The show starred Arun Govil, Deepika Chikhalia, Sunil Lahra, Arvind Trivedi, and Dara Singh in the main roles.
The show was also criticised because several religious minorities felt that it could create communal tensions. Later, the show started gaining not just Hindu fans, but also viewers from different religious backgrounds including Christianity and Islam. Bigg Boss, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Anupama Kyunki Saas Bhi, Kasauti Zindagi Ki could not beat Ramayan’s success. As per historical data, the 1988 episode of Ramayan which showed the battle between Lakshman and Meghnaad was watched by 7.7 crore viewers which is one of the highest-ever figures seen in India. The show was originally planned for 52 episodes but got extended twice to 78 episodes.
