After the Covid pandemic, there have been several numerical and statistical reports about the declining culture of audience stepping out to watch films in theatres. There are several reports that are indicating that the number of footfalls in theatres have been on an alarming decline.

In this context, Netflix boss has a pretty strong statement about the drying culture of “theatre going” and here’s a look into his opinion on this matter.

Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos recently stated that traditional moviegoing is becoming “outmoded,” emphasizing that most audiences now prefer the convenience of streaming films at home.

Speaking at the TIME100 Summit, he said Netflix is practically “saving Hollywood” by focusing on consumer preferences and adapting to evolving viewing habits. Sarandos acknowledged that while the communal experience of theaters still holds value for some, it no longer represents the primary way people want to watch films.

As a result, the future of cinemas appears uncertain, with many theaters struggling to stay relevant in a world where on-demand, at-home entertainment increasingly dominates audience choices.

This could perhaps be reflecting the trend in the Indian cinema as well, considering that not many films have been able to generate adequate revenues at the ticket counters. The audience have come to a mindset where they are watching only big scale spectacle films in theatres while preferring OTT watching as an option for most other films.
