The Malayalam film industry got a good kickstart in 2025, as quite a few films have become big hits at the box office. Generally, Mollywood is known for its content-oriented films. Earlier, this industry’s movies used to have a limited market compared to other South Indian industries like the Telugu and Tamil film industries. But now, Mollywood is taking steps towards delivering huge money-spinning films as well.
Malayalam films have mints approximately Rs. 500 crores at box office in the first quarter of 2025, making it one of the most profitable industries in the country this year. At this pace, it may even give tough competition to Tamil film industry, which has been constantly failing to deliver big blockbusters consistently for quite some time.
The biggest blockbuster of Mollywood this year was Mohanlal’s L2E: Empuraan, which collected around Rs. 268 crores at the box office. The second highest grosser is also Mohanlal’s film, Thudarum, which has earned Rs. 178 crores and is still going strong in theatres. Boxing drama Alapuzzha Gymkhana is in third position with earnings of around Rs. 68 crores. It is followed by Rekhachitram (Rs. 57 crores) and Officer On Duty (Rs. 53 crores).
On the other side, Dragon and Good Bad Ugly are the only blockbusters delivered in Kollywood this year. Big films like Suriya’s Retro and Ajith’s Vidaamuyarchi failed to reach expectations and ended up as box-office disappointments. Among small films, only Kudumbasthan and Tourist Family were able to make a mark at the box office.
Considering the current trend, we have to see if Mollywood can compete with Kollywood, which is struggling with back-to-back box-office flops.
