When Anurag Basu’s Life In A…Metro was released in theatres 18 years ago, its music became a cultural phenomenon. Composed by Pritam, the album had an iconic lineup of voices – KK, Fahruk Mahfuz Anam (James), Adnan Sami, Soham Chakraborty and Roopkumar Rathod, among others. Now, as the film’s spiritual sequel, Metro…In Dino is about to release, cinephiles are missing the late singer KK more than ever. Fans also fondly remembered the late actor Irrfan Khan, whose performance and screen presence in the original film remain iconic.
During the trailer launch of Metro…In Dino today, the director Anurag Basu was asked whether he had done anything through the songs to pay tribute to KK, and his answer left everyone emotional. He said, “The whole film and the soundtrack are a tribute to him (KK). The film is a tribute to KK and Irrfan Khan. I was telling Bhushan ji (Bhushan Kumar) today that KK used to complement Pritam’s compositions the most. Not just Life In A…Metro, but KK had sung for all my films. Obviously, I will miss him.”
Last week, during the launch of the song Zamaana Lage, Konkona Sen Sharma revealed that she missed Irrfan on the sets of the film. For the uninitiated, the actress was paired opposite the late actor in the first film, and she is the only cast member who has been repeated for the sequel. Basu also shared that Konkona broke down during the shooting of the film, remembering Irrfan. Answering a question asked by Filmfare about Irrfan, she said, “Yes, there were so many times (I missed him). I don’t want to say how and when, but when you watch the film, you will understand.”
To this, Basu added, “We were shooting a scene, and the tone for it was a little similar to a scene from the first film. Suddenly, Konkona started crying, and even right now, I am worried that the same will happen if someone asks a question about him. We miss him, we miss KK very much, and there are many others who are missing now, with whom we collaborated earlier.”
Metro…In Dino stars an ensemble cast featuring Konkona Sen Sharma, Anupam Kher, Saswata Chatterjee, Neena Gupta, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi and Rohan Gurbaxani. The film will be released in theatres on July 4.
