Singer Chinmayi Sripada is popular among South audiences not just for her vocals but also for her outspoken nature over women atrocities. She often expresses her candid opinions through social media platform X and involves in heated debates with her followers whenever women are mistreated.
She has once again sparked a huge debate with her scathing remarks against prominent personalities of South film industry. Yesterday, she openly called out legendary actors Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan for praising Tamil poet and lyricist Vairamuthu, who was recently conferred with the highest literary honor of the country, Jnanpith Award.
Chinmayi reacted strongly on both the congratulatory posts of Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan over Vairamuthu. She wrote: “End of the day, men WILL stand by their bros, uncles, dads, friends, mentors. Who cares if multiple women were traumatised?”
It is well known that Chinmayi made shocking allegations of sexual misconduct against Vairamuthu in 2018 during the historical #MeeToo movement which exposed sexual abuse on women across the country in different fields. She repeatedly accused the lyricist on several occasions later and even slammed the Tamil film industry for turning a dead ear to her allegations.
Now, the veteran lyricist has recently been honoured with the prestigious Jnanpith Award for his distinguished contribution to Tamil literature over the years through his works. Born on July 13, 1953, in Tamil Nadu, R. Vairamuthu is regarded as one of the most prominent exponents of contemporary literature with his command on Tamil language.
As soon as the news came out, several film personalities of Kollywood started congratulating the lyricist for this huge honour. Among them were superstar Rajinikanth and actor-politician Kamal Haasan. But, Chinmayi openly criticised the decision and questioned those who are wishing Vairamuthu.
Chinmayi came up with a series of posts on X to express her deep disappointment over this development.
She said, “In 2018, multiple women of different age groups named one Poet – Lyricist as their molester. Today the Gnanpith is awarded to the man, after someone like Sri Jayakantan, whose daughter called Vairamuthu out for presenting a forged, fake letter by Sri Jayakanthan ‘praising’ Vairamuthu.”
She further stated, “The collective voices of the women who named him, were silenced. I paid a very heavy price – the rest of the women who left their dreams behind weren’t half as lucky as I.”
For God’s sake… P.S.: Men in such power in cinema transitioning to politics completely turning a deaf ear to women who come on record to say they were molested by ‘his uncle-mentor’ must remind women who vote – that men will never be on our side. The weirdest thing – one of the women in his own party publicly named the Poet.”
Chinmayi’s ranting on two notable bigwigs of Kollywood has now become a talking point in the media and the industry circles.
