You know those films that just hit different, no matter how many times you’ve already viewed them? Yes, is totally that movie. For it has everything – college chaos, romance, action, comedy, dramatic slow-mo shots, and of course, doing what he if best at – stealing hearts. It’s basically Bollywood in its most extra, most entertaining form. You want big drama, bigger emotions, unforgettable music, and memorable scenes that have been living in our heads for, what, twenty-one years now? Wild.
So when the rumors about Main Hoon Na 2 started buzzing back in February, we were all in. We don’t just want a sequel, we need it. For the culture. For the throwback feels. And let’s be honest, for the sheer SRK-ness of it all. Let’s revisit the ending of Main Hoon Na. Major Ram (Shah Rukh Khan) finishes his mission, he reunites with his half-brother Laxman/Lucky (Zayed Khan), almost gets the girl Chandni Chopra (Sushmita Sen), and as viewers, we are satisfied with our happy cry. But was everything neatly tied up with a ribbon? Not, really. For we don’t know what happened to Ram and Chandni after the mission. We don’t know what happened to Lucky – did he continue being a full-time heartthrob? So many questions, so few answers. Wouldn’t a sequel take all those warm threads and turn them into real stories?
Nobody can be pitted against filmmaker Farah Khan when it comes to offering cheeky melodrama. Honestly speaking, the viewers too loved every single over-the-top moment they were offered. From the slo-mo walks to dancers randomly breaking into choreography mid-scene – the film came across as an absolute chaos, but in the most filmy way possible. And a sequel would be the perfect excuse for Farah to go even bigger. How about a spy thriller that meets college comedy and family drama? Viewers definitely deserve something wild, colorful, and unapologetically Bollywood.
Shah Rukh Khan as Major Ram was clearly an interesting mix of filmy hero and soft, sensitive brother. He carried the classic Shah Rukh intensity in the eyes, and the awkward yet adorable college student act that made him both relatable and likeable. Only he could most over-the-top moments feel believable, and pulled them off with ease and perfection. If he returns as Major Ram, he would still look impossibly cool. He could be a high-ranking army official now, but still carry that soft-boy charm.
