Mahakumbh 2025: A massive fire broke out in the Mahakumbh area on Sunday, triggering chaos as flames engulfed several tents, leaving a trail of destruction. The incident occurred at the Geeta Press camp, where approximately 200 tents were reduced to ashes, along with belongings of the occupants. One person sustained burn injuries in the blaze, according to a person, who oversees operations at the Geeta Press camp.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken cognizance of the incident and personally visited the site.

“Two LPG cylinders exploded in Sector 19 of the Maha Kumbh Mela, causing a big fire in the camps. Fire fighters are trying to douse the blaze,” Akhara Police Station In-charge Bhaskar Mishra told PTI.

Significant damage is reported from Shankaracharya Marg in Mahakumbh area, resulting in losses estimated at over Rs 50 lakh. Geeta Press books and other essential items were reduced to ashes in the blaze, which has now been brought under control. 

The fire broke out just 500 meters from the location where Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was scheduled to meet Shankaracharya Nischalananda Saraswati Maharaj and Dwarka Sharada Peethadheeshwar Swami Sadanand Maharaj.

The fire brigade swiftly responded to the incident, managing to bring the blaze under control before it could spread further. As per the Chief Minister’s instructions, senior officials have reached the site to oversee relief operations and assess the situation.

The official X handle of Maha Kumbh 2025 expressed grief over the fire incident. “Very sad! The fire incident at #MahaKumbh has shocked everyone. The administration is ensuring immediate relief and rescue operations. We pray Maa Ganga for everyone’s safety,” the post read.

The account also shared a video showing thick black smoke rising from the affected area.

The 45-day Maha Kumbh 2025 began on January 13, coinciding with Paush Purnima. Over 7.72 crore devotees have taken a holy dip so far, as per official figures until Saturday. On Sunday alone, more than 46.95 lakh people participated in the ‘snan’ (holy dip).
