A 45-year-old woman died after her neighbours allegedly raped her in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district, police said on Sunday.
Police have arrested two accused, aged 40 and 30.
Investigators are awaiting the postmortem report to determine the extent of her injuries and how they were caused.
Additional SP Rajesh Raghuvanshi said, “The woman knew the accused as they were neighbours. A preliminary medical examination showed that the woman died due to excessive bleeding. We are awaiting a postmortem report to know the full extent of injuries.”
The incident is believed to have taken place after the woman attended a wedding. According to police, she was raped and left bleeding at the house of one of the neighbours.
Police said that as per the woman’s son, during the wedding, she had been asked to accompany some other women to a nearby field.
“Her son told us that when she did not return that night, people went out looking for her the next morning. Their relatives told them the woman left with the two accused. The woman was found in a shed near her relative’s home and was unconscious. She was taken to the hospital,” said a senior police officer.
The woman was taken to a local community health centre, where she died on Saturday after telling doctors about the incident and revealing the identity of the accused, police said.
Police said they are also investigating the claims of the relatives. “We are finding out why the incident was not communicated to us in a timely fashion. The life of the woman could have been saved if she had been sent to the district hospital in time. We are analysing the statements of all the witnesses and the accused,” the officer said.
