OTT streaming platforms have certainly changed the habits of audiences. Die-hard fans apart, majority of the viewers are wanting to wait for the OTT release even if any big-ticket gets released in theatres. This has become a bane for film producers. Theatrical revenue has certainly shrunk with the emergence of OTTs.
Meanwhile, Superstar Kamal Haasan has confirmed that his forthcoming action drama ‘Thug Life’ will get OTT release only after eight weeks after its theatrical release.
“It’s not an experiment. It is a pragmatic thing to do. I’m glad that OTT have agreed, we sat together and it was not a negotiation, it was a plan which maybe others also could follow. And it will make the industry healthy. I am glad that we are the first one to do this,” Haasan told media persons during the Thug Life trailer event in Mumbai.
Meanwhile, there is praise for Kamal for his words on social media. Netizens feel that it is going to be a much-needed initiative for producers and other stakeholders of the film to get benefit. Thug Life is one of the much-anticipated flicks of the year in south film industries. The trailer gave an intense glimpse of action and intrigue into a gangster world. The film will hit theatres on June 5, in multiple languages.
Over the years, OTTs’ reach has disrupted traditional box office revenue for producers. Sometimes OTT deals proved not only less profitable for makers but also replaced multiple-income streams like box office, satellite rights and music rights with single lump sum buyouts.
