Virat Kohli and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally broke the jinx to lift their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy after beating Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a thrilling final on Tuesday night. The star batter shared an emotional post on his social media, dedicating the victory not just to his teammates, but also to the fans who have supported the team for nearly two decades.
In one of the pictures shared, , along with skipper Rajat Patidar and wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma, were seen holding the prestigious trophy and donning a special RCB ‘Champions’ jersey. The t-shirt was red in colour with Champion written in gold. However, ‘I’ was replaced by ‘1’ in signifying the first-ever title for the popular franchise.
“This team made the dream possible, a season I’ll never ever forget. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed the ride over the last 2.5 months. This one is for the fans of RCB, who never ever left our side in the worst of times. This one is for all the years of heartbreaks and disappointment. This is for every inch of effort left on the field playing for this team. As far as the ipl trophy is concerned – you’ve made me wait 18 years to be able to lift you and celebrate my friend, but it’s been absolutely worth the wait,” Kohli captioned his Instagram post.
The 36-year-old’s emotions were visible the moment the final ball was bowled. He was also seen dropping to his knees and breaking down. Kohli was also seen running towards his wife, Anushka Sharma, and hugging her to celebrate the win. Meanwhile, Kohli had yet another impactful season with 657 runs in 15 innings with eight fifties. Part of the franchise since 2008, he has hammered over 8,600 runs, is the tournament’s all-time leading scorer, and has captained RCB in 143 matches, including a final in 2016.
Following the emotional win, Bengaluru jumped into celebration, lighting up the city with fireworks and painting the city red. Meanwhile, the side has organized a victory parade that is scheduled to take place on June 4 in Bengaluru, where the players will ride through the city to celebrate with their loyal supporters. However, RCB are yet to share further details about the parade.
