Mumbai Indians (MI) outclassed Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, May 21, to storm into the playoffs of the
Delhi missed the services of Axar Patel due to illness, as Faf du Plessis took charge. The South African stalwart won the toss and opted to field first. Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks played some fantastic shots after Rohit Sharma was dismissed early. However, they departed in the fifth and sixth overs, respectively.
Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma attempted to build a foundation on a tacky surface. They failed to hit the boundaries and had to play the waiting game. There was turn on offer for the spinners, and run-scoring was difficult. Tilak departed for a run-a-ball 27 after stitching a 55-run stand off 49 deliveries with Suryakumar.
Hardik Pandya was dismissed cheaply as MI reached 132/5 in 18 overs as DC were looking to restrict the hosts to a below-par total. However, Mukesh Kumar and Dhushmantha Chameera conceded 27 and 21 runs in the last two overs as Suryakumar and Naman Dhir took them to the cleaners. Suryakumar finished unbeaten on 73 off 43 balls, while Naman made 24 not out off eight deliveries. MI finished on a brilliant score of 180/5.

In reply, DC lost the wickets of reliable batters du Plessis and KL Rahul in the first three overs and never really recovered from the setbacks. They lost half their side for 65 runs inside the first 10 overs. Sameer Rizvi and Ashutosh Sharma tried to take the visitors to a miraculous win. However, the duo was dismissed in the 15th over by Mitchell Santner, and it ended Delhi’s hopes of reaching the playoffs. In the end, the visiting side was bowled out for 121 in 18.2 overs as MI won by 59 runs.
Santner was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 3/11 in four overs. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah bagged a three-for as well. All other MI bowlers who bowled on Wednesday chipped in with a wicket. With this defeat, the Capitals became the last team to be eliminated from the playoff race.
