Snow leopards, often referred to as the “ghosts of the mountains” because of their elusive nature, are notoriously difficult to spot. Found in the rugged, high-altitude landscapes of Central and South Asia, including Ladakh, these big cats have evolved to thrive in some of the harshest environments on Earth. Their thick, patterned fur provides camouflage against rocky terrain, and their powerful limbs are built for navigating steep, snowy slopes.
Sadly, snow leopards are classified as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, with only around 4,000 to 6,500 individuals estimated to remain in the wild. Habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict threaten their survival, making sightings like this even more precious.
