Reviewing the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir following India’s strikes at nine sites in Pakistan and PoK, J&K Lt Governor Manoij Sinha asked deputy commissioners to move residents from the vulnerable areas to safer locations.
The strikes, dubbed came two weeks after a terror attack in south Kashmir’s Pahalgam killed 26 civilians. In the early hours of Wednesday, soon after the strikes, across the Line of Control, leaving several people dead in the border regions of J&K.
Lt Governor Sinha said he is personally monitoring the situation and that the administration is ready for any eventuality.
“We will ensure the safety of every citizen,” Sinha said.
Official sources say that at least 10 civilians were killed and 40 were injured, mostly in ’s Poonch sector, as Pakistani troops fired artillery shells across the Line of Control. A large number of houses were damaged and caught fire in the cross-border shelling, forcing hundreds of local residents to flee to safer areas.
As the LoC between Indian and Pakistan heated up, Lt Governor Sinha interacted with top civil and police officials in the border districts to take stock of the situation.
“Took stock of the situation in border districts of J&K UT with all the senior administrative, police and district officials, including DCs of all the border districts. I am closely monitoring the situation and the government is fully prepared to deal with any eventuality,” Sinha said in a post on X.
Sinha said he has directed deputy commissioners to provide transport, food and lodging to those evacuated to different locations.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also held a meeting with top civil officers, including Chief Secretary Atul Dulloo to take stock of the situation. The CM is also likely to interact with deputy commissioners to plan for any exigency.
