In the ever-evolving landscape of Indian cinema, casting often plays a crucial role in a film’s success. Abhishek Banerjee, known for his impeccable casting choices, recently shared insights into the casting process of Netflix’s 2020 thriller Bulbbul. Talking about the same on Filmfare’s OTT Showcase, Banerjee recounted how an already released film influenced his decision to cast Triptii Dimri and Avinash Tiwary together once again.
When director Anvita Dutt approached him for Bulbbul, Banerjee saw an opportunity to reunite the duo. “When Bulbbul came to me, when Anvita ma’am brought the film to me, I told her, you know what, I saw this film and these two are very good. And that, nobody has watched this film,” he said, referring to Laila Majnu.
Bulbbul, produced by Anushka Sharma under Clean Slate Filmz, is set in the late 19th-century Bengal presidency and tells the story of a child bride’s transformation amidst supernatural elements. The film was lauded for its performances, especially Dimri’s portrayal of the titular character, also earning her a nomination at the Filmfare OTT Awards for Best Actress in a Web Original Film.
