Buddha Purnima 2025: Buddha Purnima is an auspicious festival for Buddhists in India and around the world in countries such as Thailand, China, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Tibet. It marks the birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, and the day he acquired enlightenment, as per legend. This year, Buddha Purnima will be observed on.
Born as Prince Siddhartha Gautama around 563 BC in Lumbini, modern-day Nepal; however, Gautam Buddha left his father’s kingdom to achieve enlightenment. Buddha, a philosopher, spiritual guide, religious leader, and meditator, is considered the ninth Vishnu avatar (reincarnation) by Hindus.
On this auspicious day, people from the Buddhist community worship Lord Buddha by visiting his sacred sites and temples. Some also travel to Bodh Gaya, Bihar, to see the Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where it is said that Lord Buddha obtained enlightenment.
Buddha Purnima is marked by offering prayers with the purest intentions and embracing the peace, non-violence, and harmony that Buddhism promotes.
Buddhists usually participate in colourful processions to the pagodas during the day, and meditate, offer charity, and sprinkle water at the base of the Bodhi tree.
