For decades since the inception of Indian cinema, Bollywood was at the top of the pedestal and dominated the South film industry in all aspects like budget, stardom, revenues and box office records. In fact, the rest of world also viewed Bollywood as the face of India cinema and even stars from other languages held Hindi actors and movies in high regard due to their sheer dominance at the global level.
But, SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali has completely changed the landscape of Indian box office. Since then, South movies started dictating terms by delivering back-to-back pan-India blockbusters that resonated equally well with Hindi audiences. Films like Baahubali 2, KGF 2, RRR and Pushpa 2 further consolidated the position of South cinema and relegated Bollywood to a lower position.
In the meantime, Bollywood’s success ratio plunged drastically due to monotonous storytelling and lack of proper pan-India hits barring a few like Jawan and Pathaan. When it appeared like South cinema will be taking over completely, Bollywood heaved a sigh of relief in 2025 with smash hits like Chhaava, Saiyaara and Dhurandhar.
Now, Dhurandhar 2 seems to be reasserting Bollywood’s long standing box office clout by drawing the attention of moviegoers all over the country. The sequel is set for an earth shattering start on March 19 with record breaking opening on cards.
The premiere shows are witnessing unprecedented footfalls and hints that the film will create a havoc in all domestic and overseas territories. The advance sales for first day and opening weekend are quite phenomenal as well.
Going by the current trend of bookings and the massive hype among moviegoers, trade analysts believe that Dhurandhar 2 will shatter numerous existing records and even stands a chance to create history by emerging as highest grossing Indian film by dethroning biggest blockbusters like Dangal and Baahubali 2, which are currently in the first two positions.
The Ranveer Singh starrer will have a humongous release all over the globe in different languages unlike the first part which released only in Hindi and yet stormed the box office. Now, the sequel surely has a big chance to redefine the box office standards of not just Bollywood but also Indian cinema.
If Dhurandhar 2 lives up to the high expectations, Bollywood’s collar rising moment will be back as most of the records will be under its belt until South Indian movies like Varanasi or other upcoming projects which have the potential to storm the box office.
