The Bengaluru police on Tuesday arrested a 45-year-old man for allegedly absconding with Rs 1.51 crore entrusted to him by his employer of over a decade.
The arrested accused, Rajesh B N, a resident of Vyalikaval in , had been working as a driver for a chartered accountant in Kodandaramapura in the city, according to the police.
According to the police, the chartered accountant handed Rajesh a bag containing Rs 1.51 crore on May 5 and asked him to keep it safely in the car, as the amount was meant to be deposited in a bank.
However, when the chartered accountant returned shortly afterwards to leave for the bank, both Rajesh and the car were missing. He rushed to his office address and found the car parked there. When the chartered accountant called Rajesh, he said he had stepped out to buy medicine and would return shortly. But Rajesh allegedly did not come back and soon became unreachable on his phone.
The chartered accountant then filed a police complaint. The police traced Rajesh and issued a notice to him.
The police said Rajesh appeared before them on May 9 and confessed to fleeing with the cash, leading to his arrest.
During questioning, the police learned that Rajesh had spent about Rs 1 lakh on purchases for his family and put a substantial amount into a temple’s donation box—money the police said could not be retrieved.
