Empuraan which marks the collaboration of superstar Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran released in theatres this weekend. The film is essentially socio political action drama and is a sequel for blockbuster Lucifer.
However, what could be considered a detrimental development for the film, it quickly landed in a huge political controversy after the release. The social commentary that came up after the release of the film was that it was driving an anti-Hindu narrative with its satiric take on Gujarat riots and related events.
While the Kerala government and its representatives have been appreciating the team and standing by its political intentions, the issue continued to draw negative attention at national level.
On this matter, Mohanlal shared a new message in social media as he said certain problematic scenes are going to be censored from the film.
“I have learned that some of the political-social themes that have emerged in the expression of the movie ‘Empuran’, the second part of the ‘Lucifer’ franchise, have caused a lot of depression for many of my lovers.
As an artist, it is my duty to ensure that none of my movies harbors hatred towards any political movement, idea or religion. Therefore, myself and the Empuran team sincerely regret the mental pain caused to my loved ones, and with the realization that the responsibility lies with all of us who worked behind the film
We have decided together to compulsorily remove such topics from the cinema. I have lived my cinema life as one of you for the last four decades. Your love and faith is my only strength” he stated as he confirmed that certain changes are being made to the final cut now.
