Taking a cue from this exchange, let’s understand what happens to the body if one stops eating meat for a month or 30 days.
If you switch from a heavy diet to a vegetarian one for a month, you’ll “likely notice some interesting changes” in your body.
As a clinical dietitian and diabetes educator, Kanikka Malhotra said she sees many individuals make this transition, and the first thing most people report is feeling “lighter” and more . “This is often due to increased fibre from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, which helps regulate digestion and can lead to more regular bowel movements,” said Malhotra.
According to her, one might also see improvements in their and blood pressure, since plant-based foods are naturally lower in saturated fats. “Some people even lose a bit of weight simply because vegetarian meals are less calorie-dense and more filling,” said Malhotra.
On the flip side, it’s common to experience a bit of bloating or gas at first as the digestive system is just getting used to all that extra fibre, said Malhotra. “It’s also important to pay attention to that are more abundant in animal foods, like vitamin B12, iron, and omega-3s,” said Malhotra.
While a month isn’t long enough to cause deficiencies, Malhotra recommended including fortified foods or supplements if you plan to stick with it. “Even a of vegetarian eating can be a great reset for your body- just be mindful to keep your meals balanced and varied,” said Malhotra.
