Noel Tata has retired as the chairman of Trent Limited and will step down from the boards of five other key companies as he turns 70 on November 12.
The retirement will be in line with group’s age related retirement policies for directors. Tata, however, will continue to retain his seat on the board of Tata Sons as a nominee of Tata Trusts, the holding company’s largest shareholder.
His exit from group companies comes amid escalating fight with other board members of Tata Sons on issue of chairman N Chandrasekaran’s third term and listing of holding company’s shares.
On Thursday, Trent informed the stock exchange about Tata’s retirement with effect from November 12. He will, however, serve as a Chairman Emeritus of the company.
Bahram Vakil, co-founder of law firm AZB & Partners, who currently is non-executive and non-independent director, will take over the chairmanship.
“Tata has been associated with the Company since 1997 and has provided exemplary leadership and strategic direction throughout his tenure. Under his stewardship, the company has achieved significant milestones, strengthened its market position, and delivered sustained growth and value for its stakeholders. The Board of Directors places on record its deepest appreciation and profound gratitude for his invaluable contributions to the Company over the past 29 years,” Trent said in a stock exchange notification.
Tata serves a chairman of Voltas, Tata Investment Corporation and Tata International Limited and is a vice chairman on boards of Tata Steel and Titan.
Tata Steel was supposed to hold its board meeting on October 27 but it has now been deferred to November 7 due to “unavoidable circumstances,” the company informed the stock exchange last week.
