Airbnb announced Thursday that it will donate a portion of revenue from every stay booked on its platform to Airbnb.org, its independent nonprofit arm, with the goal of channelling $500 million to the organisation over five years. The company said the new funding model takes effect immediately and aims to help Airbnb.org provide 1 million nights of free housing annually to people in crisis.
Under the arrangement, Airbnb will contribute $0.10 per stay to Airbnb.org. The company said the donation will not affect what guests pay or what hosts receive as payouts, and neither party needs to opt in. Stays cancelled before check-in and bookings for experiences or services are excluded.
Airbnb.org was founded in 2020, drawing on a grassroots effort that began in 2012 when a host sheltered people displaced by Hurricane Sandy. The nonprofit has since provided more than 1.6 million nights of free housing to over 250,000 people globally. According to the company, this year alone, it responded to more than 200 disasters, up from eight in 2023.
The new funding will allow Airbnb.org to expand into three additional areas: supporting families travelling for medical care across more than 20 countries by end-2026, providing temporary stays to survivors of domestic violence and exploitation, and extending assistance to veterans in the United States facing serious illness or intensive treatment.
Airbnb covers Airbnb.org’s operating costs, meaning 100 per cent of public donations go directly toward housing.
