Warburg Pincus-backed Appasamy Associates, a global surgical ophthalmology manufacturer, has acquired RUCK, a German manufacturer of ophthalmic surgical products and systems.
The financial details of the deal remain undisclosed.
Founded in 1978, Appasamy has established a strong presence in ophthalmology, with expertise spanning intraocular lenses (IOLs), surgical systems, diagnostic equipment, lasers and microsurgical instruments.
The company manufactures approximately 5 million IOLs annually, with more than 100 million Appasamy IOLs implanted worldwide, it said in a statement.
The acquisition supports Appasamy’s ambition to build a broader global surgical ophthalmology business, bringing together complementary technologies and capabilities into the group, it said.
Appasamy has established medical technology centres of excellence in Denmark and San Francisco, and this acquisition adds RUCK’s specialised phaco-vitrectomy capabilities to this technology base, while retaining engineering and development in Germany.
RUCK brings more than four decades of experience in ophthalmic surgery. Its portfolio includes the Pentasys, Qube and Qube Pro systems for cataract and vitreoretinal procedures. The Qube Pro and Pentasys systems are widely used and trusted by surgeons in Germany and the Benelux region.
Senthil Kumar, CEO, Appasamy, said, “As part of Appasamy, RUCK will have access to additional resources and capabilities to support the continued development of Qube Pro and its future product offerings. We look forward to working with the RUCK team to build on these strengths and create new opportunities for both businesses.”
In 2024, Warburg Pincus acquired a controlling stake in Appasamy, in what was the PE firm’s largest investment in the healthcare sector in India.
