He assumed charge of the department in August 2024, overseeing policy matters related to banking, insurance, pensions, and financial inclusion.
Before heading DFS, Nagaraju served as an additional secretary and joint secretary in the ministry of coal between 2020 and 2024. The IL&FS crisis erupted in 2018 after the infrastructure financing conglomerate defaulted on debt obligations, triggering concerns over liquidity and contagion risks across India’s non-banking financial sector.
The government subsequently replaced the company’s board in October 2018 and installed a new management team to oversee the resolution of the group’s debt and assets.
According to the group’s resolution update for 30 June 2026, IL&FS had discharged ₹50,387 crore of debt, equivalent to approximately 83% of its estimated ₹61,000-crore resolution target. The overall resolution value, including cash and infrastructure investment trust units held within the group, stood at ₹57,556 crore, representing more than 94% of the target.
The group had completed the resolution of 205 of its original 302 entities, while another 35 were at advanced stages of resolution.
